RADIOACTIVE WASTE
Air Drop In Pacific CANBERRA, June 19. A Royal Australian Air Force Lincoln bomber today dropped waste radioactive material in weighted steel canisters into the sea off the Queensland coast, the Air Minister (Mr Frederick Osborne) announced to-night. Mr Osborne said the material consisted of soapy water used to wash down aircraft which flew through radioactive dust after the Montebello atomic test two years ago. He said he had been advised that there was “no possibility of harm resulting from this disposal’’ which represented the “utmost limit of safety.” The canisters u;ere dropped hundreds of miles Out to sea in an area clear of shipping. “I have had scientific advice that the decay rate of any radioactivity in the material in the canisters is high. It will continue to decay after they have reached the bottom of the ocean.”
