UNREST IN NEW CALEDONIA
Governor Dissolves Council SYDNEY. June 19. Recent events in Algeria had repercussions in New Caledonia yesterday when the Governing Council ~ was dissolved by the Governor, the Australian Broadcasting Commission reported today. It said that the Governor took this action after two public demonstrations by more than 1000 New Caledonians. The demonstrators were in an ugly mood as they acclaimed General de Gaulle as Premier of France and called for the dissolution of New Caledonia’s Territorial Assembly and Council of Government. A committee representing demonstrators presented the demand to the Governor. The broadcast said the situation was ugly for a time and troops were ordered to stand by. No casualties were reported. Late yesterday afternoon more than 1000 demonstrators assembled outside the Government offices and repeated their demands for the council’s resignation. The council consisted of about 12 Ministers who were elected by the Territorial Assembly in the Single Chamber Parliament.
