Boxing Welter-weight Title To Virgil Akins
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) > ST. LOUIS, June 7. Virgil Akins won the world wel-ter-weight boxing championship last night. Akins, who had said that he would knock out his opponent, Vince Martinez, in the third round of their 15-round bout, won a technical knock-out in the fourth round. The referee stopped the fight with Martinez stretched out on the canvas, 52 seconds after the round began. Akins almost won in the first round, when Martinez was down five times.
Akins won the title vacated byCarman Basilio after he won the world middle-weight title from Ray Robinson,' which Robinson subsequently won back.
