“Major Combat” In Cuba

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Ret. 11.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 3.

Cuban rebels fought Army troops supported by planes, tanks and artillery today in southwestern Oriente Province, reports from Santiago, the provincial capital, said, according to a United Press International dispatch from Havana. The centre of the fighting, which was described as a “major combat,” was the town of Buey Arriba, north of the Sierra Maestra mountains, reliable sources said.

The fighting developed after the Cuban Army launched an “all out” piish against the rebels in their Oriente strongholds on Sunday with a force estimated to total between 8000 and 11,000 welltrained troops.

Two Army fighter planes were riddled by rebel anti-aircraft fire but both managed to land safely behind their own lines, it was reported.
