LIMITS FOR FISHING
Britain Rejects Iceland’s Move
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, June 4. Britain has refused to accept Iceland’s decision to extend her fishing limits from four to 12 miles.
A declaration by the British Government said it would be its duty to prevent any unlawful attempt to interfere with British fishing vessels on the high seas, including areas over which Iceland now claimed exclusive fishing rights. Britain called on Iceland to enter into negotiations to achieve an acceptable agreement on fishing before September 1, when the Icelandic decision will take effect. “Claims to exercise exclusive jurisdiction in relation to fishing in areas outside the normal limits of territorial waters are wholly unwarranted under international law,’’ the British declaration said.
The British government found it difficult to believe that Iceland would use force against British fishing vessels to enforce her decree.
