SCIENCE BLOCK AT UNIVERSITY
Minister Receives Deputation The Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) and the Education Department “are fully aware of the need for urgent action on university building,” according to a report made to the council of the University of Canterbury. The Chancellor (Mr D. W. Bain) said that, with the Vice-Chancel-lor (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn), he had put the case to the Minister last Thursday in Wellington for early authorisation of plans for the new science buildings at Riccarton. Also present were the Director of Education (Mr C. E. Beeby), the Assistant Director of Education, in charge of building (Mr C. G. S. Ellis), and the officer for higher education (Mr A. B. Thompson). “We were heard sympathetically and no fault was found with our case,” said Mr Bain. “The Minister and the department are fully aware of the need for urgent action on university building. It would not be fair to report all that the Minister said, but I shall say more to the council in committee.” (Interviewed by “The Press” six weeks ago on the prospects of an early start on the science buildings, Mr Skoglund said he could not see them being occupied before 1966. Subsequently university officers and the full council made statements claiming that the science block must be occupied by 1964 if numbers are not to be
restricted in those subjects and in others, through the release of other accommodation being delayed.)
