ADDINGTON MARKET Strong Sale For Fat Sheep; Steer Prices Drop
Fat sheep values improved at Addington market yesterday. Best butchers’ lambs were firm to dearer and light and plain lambs also met a sound •ale. The lamb yarding was much smaller than for the last two weeks. Fat wethers, which have beep hard to sell or practically unsaleable for the last week or two, came back into their own as a result of the smaller offering of heavy lambs. Wethers were 5s to 10s dearer. Fat ewes had another buoyant sale. In the fat cattle section steer prices dropped sharply with some of the heavier and secondary quality steers back by as much as £5 a head al the close.
FAT LAMBS The fat lamb entry at 2344 head waa very much smaller than last week, and though quality was hardly as high as at the last sale, there was another good sale for all classes. The good class of butchers* lamb was fully up to late rates and possibly Is to 2s better. Ordinary and light lambs, of which there was a sprinkling, were also in demand, with useful competition from graziers. A good market also existed for shorn lambs—particularly the heavy class. Once again there was a sizeable representation of West Coast lambs.in the offering. Lambs sold up to 74s Id for one from Miss S. Radford (Pigeon Bay). E. C. Parkes (Ohoka) had four at 73s Id, and his pen of 12, selling from 68s 7d, averaged exactly 70s Id. Shorn lambs brought up to 70s Id for 10 from J. U. McCracken (Hayland), who sold 97 at an average of 60s 2d. Values were:— Extra prime heavy lambs, 66s- Id to 74s Id. Prime butchers* lambs, 59s Id to 65s Id. Prime medium lambs, 50s Id to 58s Id. For the last week or two ave hard to »eM or Virtually unsaleable. The entry yesterday was 2819, compared with 3233 last week. The improvement to a large extent lay in the smaller offering of fat lambs this week with a o£ heav y lambs. In the face of this situation buyers nao once more to turn to wethers. The wether yarding was not a big ° n «. with most of the entry made up of sheep which had.to be turned out after earlier weak sales. The juajity of. the offering was indifWith some outside competition to help the market along as value ® Picked up by at least ss, and in some cases by as much as 10s, with the prime lightweight class in particularly good demand. Competent observers, however, pointed out that farmers could not take the improved values as standard ones, and the market might Well sag again if a heavy weight of wethers were sent forward which wa « beyond the capacity of the market. Ewes, which were generally of good quality, met another keen sale, with values up frequently by 2s to 3s on late rates. Opening with prices on a par or slightly better than last week, the market improved as it went along. Young ewes were in particularly good demand, and several pens of heavy tallowy ewes also sold to advantage. Some of the light plainer sorts, however, appeared harder to sell, and there were some passings. The market was topped by H. D. Stan lake (Waikuku). who sold 1 23 wethers at 79s Id to 86s Id, with six at the top figure and 10 realising 83s Id. G. J. Francis (Hals well) sold one at 82s Id. With an outstanding line of seven ewes carrying a good covering of wool. V. W. Boag (Lauriston) realised 56s Id for the top 15 out of 80 which averaged 545. The sale for these opened with rates back 40s a head, and the market progressively deteriorated until toward the close some of the heavy and secondary steers were selling at up to £5 behind last week’s values. Over-all the market could probably be quoted down about £3, with heavy-weight steers showing a relatively larger decrease. There was not such a heavy supply of heifers, and for these the market showed a -atber smaller decline — about 40s a head. The cow market might also have been a shade easier, but by and large it was not markedly different. The entry this week totalled 652 against 532 at the last sale. Extra good heifers sold up to about £53, good heifers from £3B to £47. and medium heifers from £22 to £35. The cow entry included six mainly young Friesian cows from Kaikoura. These sold well from £34 to £53 10s, averaging £45. The better type cows on offer sold from £42 up to £53 10s,- with the inferior class at £l9 to £2B. VEALERS Veal values moved downwards once again. The entry, of mixed quality, was again a full one, and with limited competition prices were easier by 30s a head on last week’s lower prices. The sale began with values on a more modest level, and they remained about constant throughout. There were few if any passings, sellers being prepared to meet the market. Values were:— Prime large runners, £2O 18s fid to £23 18s fid; good runners, £l7 3s fid to £2O 3s 6d; medium runners, £l2 16s to £l6 13s 6d; good prime suckers, £l3 18s fid to £l6 18s fid; medium to good suckers, £9 8s fid to £l2 18s 6d; small suckers, £7 3s 6d to £9 3s fid; and calves of indifferent quality, £3 18s 6d to £7 8s fid. FAT PIGS There was a medium entry In the porker section, which included one truck from outside districts. As was the case last week, best quality pigs sold very well. Plain and unfinished types also met a better market. In the chopper section the yarding was smaller, and the easing in values of last week was • fully recovered. Baconers came forward in much smaller numbers, and values improved by 3s to 5s a head. > Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, £5 9s 6d to £6 9s 6d/ Medium porkers, £6 17s fid to £7 17s fid. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was a little larger than last week, and quality showed very little improvement. The attendance of buyers was a little smaller, but all best quality pigs sold well, though they were a little easier than last week. On the other hand, large stores met a better demand. Seven advertised Berkshire sows made £l2 12s to £l3 13s, and two Large White boars made £lO 10s per pig. Values were:— Small weaners. 31s to 40s. Best weaners, 52s to 60s. Slips. 55s to 655. Small and medium stores, 70s to 85s. Large stores, 90s to 120 s.
