WORK FOR HARD OF HEARING
X London Visitors Praise
Work for the hard of hearing in New Zealand was praised by Mr Malcolm Slater, vice-president of the London Hard of Hearing Club, in a recent talk to members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing. Mr Slater congratulated the New Zealand branches on their efforts to obtain suitable premises, where a full social life and lipreading instruction could be given to members. In London, leagues usually met socially once a week and the teaching of lip-reading was undertaken by the British Education Department, he said. The annual subscription to British leagues was 15s annually, as against the New Zealand fee of 5s a year. He also discussed hearing aids issued by the British Health Service with free batteries and free servicing After he had answered many questions, Mr Slater was introduced to all members of the branch by the secretary. Mr McGregor. Miss E. M. Ash, the first tutor to the Christchrch branch, thanked the guest speaker and told of the pioneer work done by Mrs Hurd-Wood in organising the New Zealand leagues on a national basis.
