DEBUTANTES PRESENTED
National Party . Ball The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) received seven debutantes at a ball held by the St. Albans electorate of the New Zealand National Party at the Winter Garden last evening. Each debutante was presented by Mrs L. W. Pepperell, wife of the chairman of the electorate. Before the girls and their partners began the debutante waltz, Mr Holyoake congratulated the- St. Albans , electorate on its initiative in holding debutante balls every year. To the debutantes he said: “This is a great occasion for you tonight. You have been looking forward to it for a long time and will look back on it for longer. You are really out in adult society now and I hope you will have many years of fun. dancing and all the good things in life.”
The debutantes all wore white or cream full-skirted frocks and carried white posies tied with blue ribbon, representing the National Party’s colours. Each debutante was given a ball invitation card which had been signed by Mr Holyoake. The lounge and ballroom were decorated with autumn flowers, foliage and variegated potted plants. On the table in the official alcove was an attractive bowl of russet chrysanthemums. During the evening paper hats and novelties were distributed, giving the ball a gay, festive air. Debutantes The debutantes, who had been trained for the ceremony by Miss E. Comyns-Thomas, were: Misses Lynette McFadden. Patricia Matthews, Joan and Kathleen Hubbard, Beverley , Charles. Heather Caithness and Anthea Cole. Specially-invited guests included the following:—Mr J. B. Jenkins, chairman of the Canter-bury-Westland Division of the New Zealand National Party, and Mrs Jenkins; Mr E. P. Wills, deputy-chairman of the division, and Mrs Wills; and Miss E. Comyns-Thomas. Members of the ball committee were Mesdames J. E. Purchas (secretary), M. Woollev, D. Vile. Miss M. Rogers. Messrs W. Mappiebeck, R. James and B. Caird. Mrs Pepperell’s gown of silver stiffened satin was striped in black and pin-spotted in green. It was made with a cowl neckline and full skirt. Mrs Purchas wore an Empire-style frock of pink nylon lace over taffeta and a grey fox cape.
