Bookmaker Robbed

Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 29. A thief snatched a satchel containing between £7OOO and £BOOO from a Melbourne bookmaker in a lane in the city yesterday and escaped in a utility vehicle. The bookmaker, Lyall James Jenkins, aged 41, told the police he had just left the Victorian Club and was standing in a lane off Bourke street when the satchel was snatched from under his arm. He said the satchel contained money from his own betting wins and also winning bets for other people. The thief was chased for 50 yards through the crowd. He leaped into the back of a waiting utility truck, which drove off at high speed. As the thief jumped into the back, he shouted out “Go,” and the truck was driven off. The tailboard was down, obscuring the number plate.
