Sportsman’s Notebook WOMEN PLAYERS TRAINING FOR INDOOR BASKETBALL’
With the weekly competition matches under way, members of women’s indoor basketball teams in Christchurch are training hard to gain selection for the senior provincial side. The first major fixture of the season will be a tournament with teams from Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Mid-Canterbury and Otago, which will be held in Christchurch at Queen’s Birthday week-end. This season, Canterbury- should have a strong senior team. At the last national championships the Canterbury side won the A grade reserve title, and has qualified for competition in the A grade this season.
Nola Tregonning, Pamela Edwards, Jean Fuller, and Lynne Luxton should form the nucleus of the season’s representative side. Two youngsters who have impressed in their matches so far are Beverley Roberts (Training College), and M. Elms (University). ,It seems likely that they will be given a trial in the side if their present high standard continues. * ¥ *
Professional Boxing
The Canterbury Boxing Association will hold its next professional boxing contest in Christchurch oh May 20. The association has arranged a light: weight bout between Brian Bennett (Australia) and Colin Shanks (New Zealand). These two boxers should provide enthusiasts with an excellent contest for each has a long string of victories to his credit. Shanks recently beat Billy Leckie in Southland and Bennett has lost only two of his 31 fights in Australia. At 21 he is still the feather-weight champion of New South Wales. Amateur bouts have also been arranged for two of the Empire Games boxers for this meeting.
Badminton Titles
It is possible that the South Island Badminton championships may be held in Christchurch this year. The Canterbury Badminton Association has applied to have these championships allocated to the city, but the decision has not been made yet by the New Zealand Badminton Federation. Last year, the South Island championships were held in Dunedin. ¥ ¥ ¥
Rose In America
Murray Rose, the dual Olympic swimming champion, recently won the 220 yards, 440 yards and 1650 j-ards titles at the American Indor championships. Rose has been omitted from the Australian swimming team for Cardiff be-
cause he, like Jon Hendricks, has been studying in the United States. Rose may be invited to swim for Britain at the Empire Games because he. is British by birth. ¥ ¥ ¥
Basketball Tournament
The Canterbury Basketball Association’s annual tournament which was postponed last Saturday because of rain, will be held this Saturday. Senior and senior reserve games will begin at 9.30 a.m. and all other grades will begin at 11 a.m. Competition matches will begin on May 10.
Wimbledon, 1958
Tennis officials of the annual All-England championships, which will be held at Wimbledon in June, had hoped that entries would be received from Russia. Last year, the Russians sent several observers to the tournament, and have since held championships in their own country, including at tournament at the World Festival of ' Youth, which was held in Moscow. The Russian authorities, however, last week informed the Wimbledon organisers that entries would be sent only for the junior championships, held at the same time. # ¥ #
World Surfing
The president of the Australian Surf Life-Saving Association (Judge Curlewis) has left for Britain to initiate clubs in European countries. With him have gone about 30 Australian lifesavers who will compete at carnivals in South Africa, Britain and France. Biarritz, in France, will have the first Australianstyle surf life-saving club. The Australians have taken with them presentation reels for the clubs to be formed. Interest is reported to be great in the British surf championships to be held at Porthtowan, Cornwall, at which the Australians will compete. ¥ ¥ ¥ %
Caribbean Tennis
The Auckland tennis player. Miss Ruia Morrison, did well in the two championships in which she competed in the .Caribbean, on her way to England recently. In a tournament at San Juan, Puerto RiCa, Miss Morrison beat the third-ranked Canadian player in the third round of the singles, before losing, 4-6, 4-6, in the quarter-finals to Mrs Beverley Fleitz, a prominent American player. Miss Morrison also reached the quarter-finals in a Jamaican tournament, losing to the Mexican, Miss M. A. Bueno Miss Bueno is highly regarded in the United States, and was playing in the doubles events with the Wimbledon champion. Miss Althea Gibson.
