MAORIS WELCOME TOURISTS
: Songs And Dances On Cold Morning . (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 29. Twenty-three Maoris danced and sang a polite welcome to the . Matson liner Mariposa when she docked at Auckland today. Not more than 50 of the 186 passen- ; gers watched them; the rest- were having breakfast below. , In the cold early morning the i Maoris, ceremonially clad, swayed > silently as the Mariposa lay out in mid-stream and hula music i coming over the liner’s address . system was turned off. Passengers were told there • would be no music until the liner i had berthed because the harbour board had ruled that it might
distract the mooring party. The gathering swelled from 12 people to 40 or more when the singing began, and eight cameras were trained on the welcoming gi;oup. The Americans liked the girls ("prettier than in Tahiti”) and admired the men, -although one old lady felt "sorry for the guy in the feathers. He must be freezing.”
