Farmer’s False Tax Returns

In view of the amount involved, the Court cannot consider these charges lightly,” said Mr G. A. Nichols, S.M., in the Gore Magistrate’s Court today in convicting and fining Harold Frank Winsloe, a farmer, of North Chatton, £5O on each of nine charges of wilfully furnishing false returns of income. W’th costs and solicitors’ fees the total penalty imposed was £491 7s. Mr J. R. Mills, for the Inland Revenue Department, said the defendant’s affairs had been investigated for 11 years back, during which period he had returned income totalling £12,110. The assessments showed a total of £18,308 over this period, and there was a deficiency in tax of £2024 of social security tax of £464.
