STAFF ON WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS

(New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 28. Steps aimed at widening the membership of the Wellington Journalists’ Union had been taken during the last year, the retiring president, Mr M. K. Berry, reported at the annual meeting of the union in Wellington. It was hoped, he said, to enlarge the present scope of the union—at present confined to employees of daily newspapers—by including employees of weekly newspapers and other journalists at present not covered by awards. Claims were being compiled for an award to cover employees of weekly publications. The New Zealand Journalists’ Association had been asked to cite certain other groups of journalists who had indicated their desire to be a party to any new awards. The Wellington union membership was 208, Mr Berry reported. This included the Manawatu, Wanganui and Hawke’s Bay branches.
