STRIKE IN MALTA
' Police Patrol Streets * (Rec. 9.50 p.m.) VALETTA (Malta). April 28 A complex system of pickets with orders to avert trouble moved into position today for a 24-hour island-wide protest strike against British policy in Malta. Steel-helmeted troops patrolled the city streets, and a riot squad guarded the palace of the Governor, Sir Rqbert Laycock. The strike was called by the Malta General Workers’ Union in support of Mr Dom Mintoff, who resigned as Prime Minister last week in protest against British policy. The resignation touched off a aeries of anti-British disturbances, and the Governor has taken over the day to day administration of the island colony. The bus union has declared it cannot strike today, because of a law which forbids strike action, on penalty of the loss of operating licences. In a statement issued yesterday the Governor said any disorders during the strike would be dealt with firmly.
