The Economy
Sir,—The present financial chaos in New Zealand proves once again the disastrous effect of capitalism, open markets, and the greed of sections of the community for more and more money and unnecessary luxuries at the expense of human essential needs of the majority. The first Labour Government, with its planned economy, in spite of the enormous expenses of a global war, was well on the way to insulating New Zealand from overseas depressions, To recover from our present chaotic condition we will need careful economic planning. always bearing in mind that human needs come first before negative spending.—Yours, etc., OUTLOOK. April 11, 1958.
