FIGHTING IN CUBA

Rebels Continue Struggle

(N Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK. April 10. Street fighting, strikes, and killings spread the length and breadth of Cuba today when Fidel Castro’s rebels pressed their struggle to overthrow President Fulgencio Batista. There was street fighting at Santiago de Cuba and the police shot at rebels on sight there and at Havana and Matanzas. Havana and Matanzas were the only cities to respond at all when the rebel leader proclaimed a general strike yesterday. The American Associated Press said that the Government’s firepower had withered the .prising at Santiago just as it had, yesterday at Havana, ..where 43 rebels and two policemen died.

As at Havana, the rebels hit first at public utility systems, cutting electrical power and other essential services. but they appeared to be doomed before they started. For months Santiago has been occupied by Cuban troops and the National Police. Cyprus Riots <Rec. 7 p.m.) NICOSIA. April 10.
