"Too Much Stress On Economics”

The chairman of the City Council airport committee (Cr. A. R. Guthrey) said last evening that be was interested to learn that T.A.I. might consider flying to Christchurch if the Civil/Aviation Administration refused its request to operate a Douglas DC7C at restricted loading into Whenuapai. He added that he would be getting into touch with the airline’s New Zealand representative (Mr M. Collet) at the week-end.

The airlines were overstressing the economics of using Christchurch said Cr. Guthrey. He recognised that it would cost more to fly here, but a start had to be made, and he thought the airlines would ’be surprised at the tremendous interest that would be generated by them coming to Christchurch.

Cr. Guthrey said that he was very interested in getting any of the airlines here. If they did decide to come, it would be over to the people of Canterbury and the South Island to show in a practical manner that there was a traffic potential
