Visit Of Sir Vivian Fuchs

Sir, —I think the civic reception to Dr. Fuchs was a disgrace to our city. The Mayor made an excellent speech and then Dr. Fuchs gave a most interesting and instructive speech. But during both these speeches traffic roared along, in front of the United Service hotel. Only a small number of people were able to get close enough to see the two speakers properly. Traffic can be diverted for such things as students’ processions, or to prevent elderly people being driven to the door of the Civic Theatre when invited to important civic receptions, but to stop it from passing in front of the United Service hotel for half an hour while a worldfamous man is. kind enough to spare the time to address us is apparently impossible. The final touch was when the- Mayor warmly thanked the few persons who were present for coming.— Yours, etc., CHRISTCHURCH CITIZEN. April 5, 1958.
