The Queen Mother’s Visit
Sir,—Is it permissible to suggest that a rather more lavish attention to the external appearance of the premises 'occupied by the Queen Mother during her recent visit to Christchurch might have been justified by so momentous an occasion?—Yours, etc., M.T. February 18, 1958. [Every minute detail concerning the stay of the Queen Mother at the Clarendon Hotel was fully considered in conjunction with the Internal Affairs Department, Wellington, said the managing director of Ballins Breweries (New Zealand), Ltd. (Mr B. J. Wilks). Mr N. W. Millner, chairman of directors of the Clarendon Hotel was overseas and could not reply to the correspondent’s letter. As the Clarendon Hotel was a subsidiary company of Ballins, Mr Wilks said he would be very pleased to discuss the matter with the person concerned. “Decorations, both inside and out, are naturally a matter of importance, and on each occasion of the visit of Royalty we are guided by the requirements of the Internal Affairs Department,” he said.]
