WEST COAST CLUB FINED
Athletic Union Reprimand (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. April 1. For defying the West Coast Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union by holding its postponed sports meeting on the day allotted to the Nelson Creek Sports Club, the St. Patrick’s Sports Committee has been, fined £5, and the West Coast Axemen’s Association has been severely reprimanded for holding sweepstake events in conjunction with the meeting. The Blackball, Ngahere and Nelson Creek Clubs forwarded a combined letter in which they asked that officers of the St. Patrick’s club should be dealt with by the New Zealand Union for disobedience. The letter also said that, if the axemen were not going to abide by the rules, the clubs would be obliged to delete chopping events from their programmes. A good deal of discussion followed, and it was suggested that fines of £2O and £5O should be imposed on the club. However, the suggestion that the fine be £5 was carried by eight votes to three. On behalf of the axemen, the secretary (Mr W. P. Curtain) said that they had broken no rules. Mr A. J. Greaney. a vice-presi-dent of the union, said that the Nelson Creek Club had no chopping events, and the St. Patrick’s committee had put off its cycling programme in favour of Nelson Creek. Mr Greaney moved that the penalty on the axemen should be 10s, but an amendment by Mr O. Duffy was that they should be fined £5 as they had condoned the breach committeed by the St. Patrick’s committee. A further amendment, moved by Mr H. Mason, president of the Axemen’s Association, and seconded by Mr Greaney, that the association be severely reprimanded. was carried. Mr J. Blackmun said: ‘ You might as well pass them a vote of thanks. Please don’t do it again. The whole thing stinks!”
