TRANSPORT BOARD
Labour Party Candidates Three former members of the board are among the Labour Party’s candidates for the Christchurch Transport Board’s triennial election on May 17. They are Messrs H. E. Denton, N. R. Forbes and R. T. Newman, who are three of the candidates for the six seats in the central area. The other candidates for the area are Messrs J. Shankland jun., a Transport Board bus driver and president of the Christchurch Tramways Union, Mr L. C. Southon. secretary of the union, and Mr R. H. Stillwell, a member of the Drainage Board and an unsuccessful candidate for the City Council and the North Canterbury Hospital Board at the last elections. Mr L. Christie, a city councillor and deputy-chairman of the Hospital Board, is the party’s candidate for the Heathcote seat. Mr J. Palmer, a radio engineer who stood at the last City Council election, is the candidate for the Avon seat, held by the Minister of Transport (Mr Mathison) who is the only Labour member of the present board. The Riccarton nomination will be made by the Riccarton-Sel-wyn Labour Representation Committee. which has not yet met to complete nominations. It is expected to nominate Mr G Brady for the seat. Votes for candidates of the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee for the Christchurch Drainage Board have not yet been counted. In Riccarton. it is expected that Mr J. I. Colligan will be a candidate.
