Record Climb By Fighter
(Rec. 8 p.m.) MARSEILLES. April 1.
A French rocket-powered fighter plane, flown by a test pilot. Jacques Guignard, climbed to 49,000 ft in 2min 50sec from ground level at a military airfield near Marseilles yesterday. The fighter, a Trident 11, beat the world record by 56sec. The Trident II has a rocket motor in the fuselage and a turbo-jet at each wingtip. It is designed to reach twice the speed of sound in level flight.
