AUSTRALIANS AT AUCKLAND
Home Team Wins In Triangular Contest
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. March 23. Even though almost perfect weather conditions prevailed, the triangular track and field meeting among Auckland, Auckland University and the Touring Australian universities team at Olympic Stadium last night produced no new records On a damp and dead track, Auckland, with 74 points, won from Australian Universities, 39, and Auckland University, 25. Most of Auckland's Empire Games nominees competed, but against the opposition rather than the clock. The exceptions were the national record-holder, M. G. Halberg, and the six-mile champion. B A. Magee, both of whom turned in fast times. Halberg dashed over the first 440 yards of his mile race in 61 seconds and though the race was already as good as won kept up a good pace to complete the journey in 4min B.9sec. The second man home, the Australian, R. J. McColl, clocked 4min 25sec. Magee covered three miles in 13min 52.65ec, his fastest competitive time over this distance for the season.
The visiting sprint hurdler. J. R Voyce, who represented Australia in the 110 metres at the Melbourne Olympics, had too much pace for the Auckland titleholder. R. Williams. in the sprint hurdles. However. a surprise was in store for him in the 220 yards hurdles. He nad built up such a commanding lead around the double curve that the national junior champion, D. Norrie, seemed to have no chance. However. Norrie claimed a determined drive for victory with a tremendous dive at the tape which left him spreadeagled . but victorious.
