ATHLETICS Five Records Broken At University Championships

Five records were broken at. the Canterbury University athletic championships at Rugby Park on Saturday. In the women’s 75 yards Miss A. MacDonald not only broke the university record but equalled the Canterbury record of B.7sec and beat the Empire Games nominee. Miss M. A. M. Chamberlain, the joint holder of the provincial record with Mrs D. M. May. Miss Chamberlain was competing by invitation.

A consistent second to Miss Chamberlain in the sprint events for the last two seasons, Miss MacDonald has been making steady improvement, and at the West Coast title meeting two weeks ago she ran B.6sec for the 75 yards with a slight following wind.

Although very fast at the start Miss MacDonald surprised by getting almost a two yard advantage in the first few strides. Miss Chamberlain fought back well and was beaten only by inches. Miss MacDonald was the most successful of the women competitors with wins in the 80 metre hurdles, long jump, and 100 yards also. D. Beauchamp ran an aggressive race to win the 880 yards in the record time of lmin 65.8 sec, breaking the record of J. D. MacDonald, made last year, by a second. Taking the lead after the first lap, run in 58sec, Beauchamp drew away from Macdonald, who seemed sure to be second. 1 Keats made a fast run late in the race to snatch second place halfway up the straight and record his best time of lmin 55.55ec. Three-Mile Record Lapping several of the other runners, R. Stevens slashed 20sec off the former three-mile record of 14min 59sec set by P. Joyce in 1955. The Canterbury quartermile champion, B. Kerr, had a successful day, winning the 440 yards and the 220 yards. His time of 50sec in the 440 yards was an improvement of .4sec on his own record made last year. In the 100 yards Kerr had to be satisfied with second place to I. Hamilton, whose time of lO.lsec was only .Isec outside the record made by R. Opie in 1909. A promising runner as a junior, Hamilton appears to be getting back to his best form again and with another fortnight to the New Zealand university tournament he could improve still more. The engineering faculty team broke the four by 110 yards relay record with a time of 45.45ec. Another unsuccessful attempt was made on the junior New Zealand mile record of 4min 16.2 sec by D. Dixey. who will become a senior in May. Dixey’s time was 4min 20.8 sec. Dixey appeared to have an excellent chance of taking the record when he reached the half-mile in 2min Bsec. He slumped to 3min 15sec oh the third lap but still had a chance if. he could rally with a fast last lap. Although he improved for dictate h§.wa?..un?l»le sustain his effort. Another fine run was made by the Canterbury senior 880 yards record and title-holder, G. Hack, in the inter-club 660 yards handi** cap in which he took secona place from scratch in lmin’22sec. The inter-faculty championship was won by Arts with 49 points from Science, 42. and Engineering. 26.
