REACTOR FOR RESEARCH
U.S. Would Pay Half Cost
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 23.
Under its nuclear research agreement with New Zealand, the United States would pay half the cost or up to 350,000 dollars towards setting up a nuclear research institute in this country, said Mr Russell L. Kirk, the leader of the atomic energy mission, which arrived here yesterday. *
Asked whether granting the subsidy meant that New Zealand would buy an American-type reactor rather than a British-type machine using natural uranium. Mr Kirk said that most research reactors using enriched uranium were the American type. “The reason for using this type of reactor for research is that you get a higher concentration of U 235.” he said. “The reactor is more compact, cheaper to operate and is a better reactor in many ways.” The United States had many different types of. research reactors, said Mr Kirk. Some would take a fair time to set up but others were almost complete, and could be set down and switched on ready for work.
