FIGHTING AT MEDAN
“Real Attack” By Rebels
(Rec. 11.45 p.m.) SINGAPORE, March 21. Rebel sources In Singapore claimed today that fighting was raging around Medan, capital of Northern Sumatra. They said this was the “real attack” on the city. The fighting on Sunday and Monday, which ended in the withdrawal of rebel troops from Medan, had been a premature attack launched because of a staff error, the sources said.
The sources said that yesterday the Premier of Indonesia (Dr. Djunada) had met Colonel Sarbini of East Java to plead with him for troops for Sumatra. The sources said th? regional commanders in Java were refusing to allow their troops to fight, and that the war in Sumatra was being conducted by the Jakarta garrison, paratroopers and the Air Force. The “New York Times” said today that a correspondent had reported from Padang that rebel forces were harassing Government troops around the Caltex oil holdings at Pakanbaru. Dr. Sjafruddin Prawiranegara, the rebel Premier, had warned that the revolutionary regime “could not afford to allow Caltex to work in the Interests of the Jakarta Government.”
