Battleship Into Nails

OSLO, March 20. The battleship Tirpitz, once the mighty pride of the Nazi fleet, had been turned into nails, the American Associated Press reported. The agency said that nothing of the giant battleship, sunk in Tromsoe Fiord in November, 1944, could now be seen above the water.

For 10 years, wrecking crews have been cutting loose 30,000 tons of steel plates, and they have been used mainly to make nails. Many of the battleship’s engines had been sold.

Honningsvaag, the northernmost city in the world, at the North Cape, obtained its electricity from a Tirpitz generator. The bodies of many of the 1200 sailors who went down with the Tirpitz and were found in the hulk have been buried in the German war cemetery in Norway.

Secret List Stolen.—The German police have obtained secret lists of East Germans working for a West Berlin anti-Communist organisation, the West Berlin police said today. The lists were stolen by a girl agent.—Berlin, March 19.
