EISENHOWER AND TRUMAN
“Relations Still Strained”
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, tvlarch 19 British correspondents who attended recent White House press conferences in Washington say strained relations were still maintained between President | Eisenhower and Mr Harry Truman. The “Daily Telegraph” recalls that they have not been on speakipg terms fojr five yearg ajod that they avoid meeting one another. ' v Mr Truman is always extremely caustic in his public references to the President, whom he regards as a good executive general but a poor chief executive. This has had one minor consequence in the White House. A large metal plaque which was put up to record Mr Truman’s role in extensive repairs made to the building during his tenancy has disappeared from view. It has not been removed. It has been hidden by a huge portrait of William McKinley, the last Republican President before Mr Eisenhower to achieve reelection.
