Cycling HORNBY 10-MILE RACE
J. Spencer Wins With three-quarters of a mile to go in the Hornby Cycling Club’s 10mlle race at this week’s night meeting, J. Spencer spreadeagled the field of 16 to record his first win since he became a cash rider three years ago. At the turn R. Pont (4min) led F. Lucas, R. Whitter (3min), and J. Spencer and H. Sutherland (2}min) by 23sec. They were followed by N. Woodgate and D. Hewer (2min lOsec) a further 27sec behind. Twenty seconds later A. Howison, A. Bates (Hmin), P. Yaxley and A. Ayers (Imin 50s ec) took the turn. The scratch men, R. Lucas, B. Woodgate, J. Williams, and R. Woodgate took the turn 28sec later.
Setting a solid pace, the scratch riders reached the front one mile and a half from the finish. Then three-quarters of a mile further on J. Spencer came into the lead. Nearing the finish Spencer was nearly caught, but he held on to win by eight. lengths from R. Lucas. J. Williams just passed B. Woodgate for third, three lengths behind Lucas.
In a three-mile sports special race 27 riders started. The results were:—
