Boxing AUSTRALIANS IN DUNEDIN

Offer Of Bout In Singapore (New Zealand Prea Association) DUNEDIN, March 18. Offers which the Australian boxing trainer, Billy Lawrence, has from a Singapore promoter may mean his departure from Dunedin with his three fighters. Brian Bennett, Don Barnes, and Charlie Smith. Mr Lawrence, with Barnes and Smith, came here early in January, and since then Barnes has had one fight and Smith two —the Australians won with ease. Bennett arrived two weeks ago and has not fought, although he is due to meet Joe McNally (Dunedin) at Feilding on April 5 for a purse of £5OO. Barnes yesterday signed a contract to fight the national welterweight champion, Barry Brown, at Wellington on April 15. The title-holder will get an 80 per cent share of the gate and Barnes has received a guarantee for £5OO.

Smith has been booked by the Canterbury Boxing Association to meet another Australian, Kid Lewis, of Melbourne.

Mr Lawrence has two fights for Bennett in Singapore, the first one on April 21 with a guarantee of £5OO. If Bennett wins that there is a second contest with a Japanese boxer with a guarantee of £6OO.
