French Cabinet Faces Another Crisis
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) PARIS, March 18. The five-month-old Cabinet of the Radical Prime Minister, Mr Felix Gaillard, faces a vote of confidence today and police have been drafted into the city from the provinces to guard against possible street clashes. The vote is on the plan to strengthen Government stability as the key to constitutional reform, and three major demonstrations are planned to coincide with it. The Government seemed assured of obtaining the vote. However, any repetition of last Thursday’s incident when thousands of policemen demonstrated outside the National Assembly building would, observers thought, result in its overthrow.
The Paris police plan to stage a second demonstration today to back up demands for higher pay and danger money.
The Communist Party has called for a “great anti-fascist” meeting The Right-wing groups, led by Mr Jacques Soustelle, former Governor-General of Algeria, will hold a counter-demonstration in another hall.
