Wellington Ready To Welcome Fuchs, Hillary

WELLINGTON, March 18. Sir Vivian Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary will drive through Wellington in an open car after the civic reception in the town hall tomorrow for the British trans-Antarctic expedition and the New Zealand support parly. H.M.N.Z.S. Endeavour, with the parties aboard, is expected to berth at Waterloo quay at 9 a.m. At 5.30 a.m. Lady Fuchs, Lady Hillary and other relatives of the expedition’s members, will go on board the former Antarctic supply ship, Magga Dan, which will rendezvous with the Endeavour at Wellington Heads an hour later.
A report from the Endeavour states the first glimpse of New J Zealand for the 12 United King- J dom members of the expedition was through the ship’s radar J yesterday, afternoon. The Endeavour made a landfall off Banks Peninsula at 2.30 p.m. but the coastline was not visible till the , ship was within seven miles,of it. As the Endeavour sails up the harbour to her berth tomorrow morning, four Vampire fighters from Ohakea will fly over her in salute. . The party will be welcomed by '■ members of the Ross Sea Committee, Rear Admiral C. R. L. Parry, secretary of the British 1 Antarctic Expedition Committee, 0 and senior naval officers. A prfess conference will be held * at 9.15 'a.m. and at 10 a.m. the J party will be given a reception by
the Ross Sea Committee. TheM civic reception will begin at noon,W and after the drive through the w city, the men of the expedition 1 will attend a State luncheon at v Parliament Buildings. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr F. J. Kitts, M.P.) asked today that business premises in the city put out flags. From the Town Hall, the ceremonial drive will pass through Mercer street, Willis street and down Lambton quay. The first car, carrying Sir Vivian Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary, will be that used by the Queen Mother during her recent visit. In the following cars will be Mr D. G. Stratton, deputy leader of the British party, Mr J. H. Miller, deputy leader of the New Zealand party, Rear-Admiral Parry, Captain H. Kirkwood, master of the Endeavour, Squadron Leader J. Lewis and Squadron Leader J. R. Claydon. Honorary Degree For Fuchs (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) EDINBURGH, March 16. Edinburgh University is to confer the honorary degree of doctor of law on Sir Vivian Fuchs. He will receive the degree at one of three graduation ceremonies on July 3,4, dr 16. A resolution to confer the degree was sent by radio to Sir Vivian Fuchs aboard the Endeavour. His acceptance was received.
