ATHLETICS Miss Sloper Leading In N.Z. Women’s Pentathlon

AUCKLAND. March 14. R. Williams, the titleholder, leads with 3652 points after the first five events in the national decathlon championships which began here today. This is 118 points better than Jhis best-ever total.

In the women’s pentathlon, Miss Valerie of Christchurch, who is favoured to repeat her victory at Napier last year made a good start and gained a lead of 218 points over her nearest rival, Miss Fay Nicholson, of Waikato. Drizzling rain delayed the start of both events.

There were only three competitors in the decathlon, and the competition has resolved itself into a two-man duel between Williams and the Waikato allrounder, A. G. Lawless. A. Divich (Auckland) is the other competitor.

Under the slippery conditions. Miss Sloper, Who was ranked second in the world last year for her shot put of 53ft sjin, experienced difficulty on the slippery paspalum surface of the circle, and under the conditions her effort of 47ft sin was a fine performance.
