Around the Greens

For the first time in the history of the New Brighton club, the final of the club’s singles championship was contested by two young bowlers, C. Ell, a colt, and F. 8001. The winner, Ell, outdrew 8001, who put up a good performance against his younger opponent. • United retained the Woolf Memorial Bowl when that club met Christchurch recently. The trophy is competed for between the two clubs in matches played on both club greens simultaneously. The late Mr Isaac Wpolf, a prominent member of both clubs for many presented the trophy. • R. McDonald, the 24-year-old Ellerslie bowler who beat J. H. Plrret, jun., to win the Auckland centre’s champion of champions singles title, is no newcomer to bowls. He has been playing since he was 11 and has been the greenkeeper at the Ellerslie club since he was 18. When McDonald was a pupil at the Ellerslie Primary School, which is next door to the club’s greens, he used to play bowls as soon as he could after school. • The winner of the Auckland centre champion of champions singles championship, R. McDonald, of Ellerslie, showed that his 23-8 win over J. H. Pirret, jun.. in the final was no stroke of luck. McDonald finished with both lives intact and during the* last two days of the titles he succeeded with every drive he made —his drawing was of a very high standard, too. • A four skipped by R. Pawsey, a new member of the New Brighton club, and J. T. Bisman’s team met in the final of the New Brighton club fours championship recently. This encounter resulted in one of the best matches played at New. Brighton this season and it was only after an extra end had been played that a decision was reached —Bisman winning the title. He is one of the best-known local bowlers and recently skipped the winning four in the Diggers’ Tournament. Pawsey has only been in Christchurch this season and he comes from the Manawatu district. • Bowling fixtures arranged are:—Thursday, March 13: floodlit tournament at Beckenham, United all day tournament. Saturday, March 15: Champion of Champions Fours, Christchurch W.M.C., and Spreydon all day tournaments. Sunday, March 16: Opawa, Kaiapoi, Canterbury, and Redcliffs tournaments. Monday, March 17: Sydenham and Beckenham floodlit tournaments. Tuesday, March 18: Cashmere floodlit tournament. Wednesday, March 19: Lincoln all day tournament, Kaiapoi W.M.C. floodlit tournament

Although R. Allison reached the final of the Opawa club’s singles championship with the advantage of having both lives intact he received tough opposition from D. Vaughan. Vaughan took one life from Allison with a 19-12 win, but lost the second match 14-17 for Allison to take the title. • A party of 32 bowlers from the West Coast clubs including Cobden, Dobson and Dunollie, recently visited Christchurch where they played matches on the Cashmere, South Brighton and New Brighton greens. The visitors thoroughly enjoyed the trip and are looking forward to local clubs touring the West Coast. • Consistently good play gave W. Cooke the Canterbury club singles and fours titles. Cooke met another prominent Canterbury bowler, H. G. Ledgard, in the singles final and only after killing the last head three times could Cooke win. Cooke was trailing 16-17 at the last head but then gained two shots to win by one point. Cooke, with O. Craighead (lead), A. Marshall (2) and A. Young (3) won the fours title at the club with consistently good teamwork. • J. O. Thompson won the club singles title at Shirley from D. Rewcastle. The women’s club at Shirley has also been holding its championships. Mrs C. Palmer won the fours from Mrs M. Dailey. The winning four was Mesdames M. Baker, M. Howie, N. Gourley, and C. Palmer.
