Second Earl Injured At Stakes Race Start

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, March 10. I The warm favourite, Second | , Earl, the leading two-year-old in New Zealand, took no part in the weight-for-age Taranaki Stakes, the feature event on the final day , of the Taranaki Jockey Club s ; autumn meeting at New Ply- ■ mouth today. Second Earl, which carried £2014 10s in investments in a total pool of £5562 10s, reared backwards in the stalls before the start of the race, threw his rider, R. G. Forbes, and injured himself. He was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon, Mr A. P. Mygergangs, and on his advice the horse was withdrawn from the race, although he was not seriously injured. Sir Thomas Duncan’s six-year-old gelding Brookside had no difficulty in beating the warm favourite, Drum Roll, in the Paul Memorial ’ Handicap, the first leg of the double. Brookside raced on the outside of Drum Roll behind the pacemaker, Editorial, all the way, hit the front with four furlongs to go, and won decisively by two lengths. The aged mare Napoli, the eighth favourite in a field of nine, won the second leg, the Urenui Handicap, narrowly from the second favourite, Conkers King. The judge, Mr W. J. Donovan, viewed three photographs before he decided that Napoli had won by a nose. Napoli trailed the pacemaker, Lennox Boy, into line, and when Lennox Boy wilted she was left in front. Conkers King, the first day winner, finished very fast on the fence and the two had a terrific battle in the last 30 yards. The double dividend for £1 , was £9O Is. The racing was held in warm,, fine weather before a good crowd, and the track was firm and fast. The totalisator on course handled £39,156, including £4478 10s on the double. The total for the second day last year was £42,825 10s. The total for the meeting was £71,800 10s, compared with £68,453 last year.
