AUSTRALIAN CUP

Dream Son’s Success (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. March 10. The maiden galloper, Dream Son finished brilliantly to score an easy win in the Australian Cup at Flemington this afternoon.

In spite of Dream Son’s win, no ambitious plans have been made for him. He is not entered in the Sydney Cup, and is not likely to be nominated for the Brisbane Cup. Until today Dream Son was eligible to run in trial events. Only three weeks ago he was beaten in a weak handicap at Geelong. After opening at 12/1, he drifted to 14/1, then started at 10/1. He was ridden with great judgment and dash by the promising apprentice, A. Yeomans, aged 19.

Andonni, which started at 20/1, would have staged another remarkable reversal of form if he had won. Andonni was in the middle of the field until the mile, when Williamson moved him through to be second two furlongs from home. Just when Andonni looked to have the race in his keeping Dream Son swamped him to take first prize. Humber Hawk struggled on well to be third.

Bundabah, which started favourite at 7/2, and Colorado Drawl, 9/2. Both ran disappointing races. The former New Zealand horse, Field Chief ran a poor last. High Gun, the hot favourite, scored, an easy win from Gay Saba and- Dight’s Hill in the Leonard Stakes over the straight six furlongs. The New Zealand-bred Gay Saba was resuming after a five months’ spell but his connexions backed him to win first up. He ran well but was no match for High Gun. whose recent form has been good. Sailor’s Guide Beaten

The Victorian stayer. Sailor’s Guide, odds-on favourite for the Carbine Stakes, was decisively beaten by Pushover and Kid Colt. Pushover won by five lengths, with Sailor’s Guide (W. Williamson) a further four lengths back, third.

The New Zealand mare Ma Reine made amends for her narrow defeat in the Bourke Handicap by winning the Farewell Handicap today in good style. She beat the heavily-favoured Landy and Farquhar. The New Zealand horses Lochie and Conclusive were scratched. Results:—
