NEW SOCKBURN OVERBRIDGE
Four-Lane Traffic Planned
Four traffic lanes and two footpaths six feet wide will be provided in the overhead bridge to be built at the Sockburn railway crossing according to particulars released by the Ministry of Works. A car parking space about 100 yards long will be provided in the shopping area. The bridge will be 48 feet wide, 100 feet long and will have a 54 degree skew because of the angle at which the railway line is constructed. It will be supported on 136 16-inch octagonal reinforced concrete piles, 35 feet long. The islands at the Blenheim road junction will remain as now but the bending approach to the bridge will be more gradual than the present approach to the Main South road because the ramp and the bridge will be built further toward the racecourse side of the existing main road. The road will be one-way from the shops to Racecourse road. The approach to the shopping area from other directions will be from Blenheim, Riccarton and Epsom roads or over the bridge from the Wigram end. The underpass to Racecourse road will be the only exit from the shopping area and persons who have entered from Blenheim. Riccarton and Epsom roads will have to return by way of the under-pass and the new deviation from Racecourse road. The present corner at Symes road and the Main South road is Crown land and will be rounded off and developed as a road to give access to Symes and Hayton roads.
