NO RECEPTION TO HILLARY
Auckland’s “Lack Of Interest”
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 10.
The Auckland branch of the Ross Sea Committee will not hold a reception for Sir Edmund Hillary when he returns to Auckland from the Antarctic. The chairman (Mr W. H. Knox) made this decision this afternoon after calling a meeting to discuss the matter —a meeting which was poorly attended. Mr Knox said that Mr R. J. Kerridge had offered the Regent Theatre free of charge. It was proposed that on Sunday, March 23, a reception be held there for Sir Edmund Hillary. Antarctic films would be shown and several musical items given. The theatre would hold 1450 persons, and the proceeds could be handed to Sir Edmund Hillary later. The meeting agreed to leave the matter in the hands of Mr Knox, who later said that because of the apparent lack of interest in a reception and the fact that it appeared all the work would rest on his shoulders he had decided to go no further with the proposal. He had not completely recovered from the effects of an accident.
