MOTOR-SCOOTER RIDER KILLED

Skid In Shingle On

North Road

A motor-scooter rider who apparently swerved to avoid a roadworks hurdle was killed early yesterday morning when his machine skidded in shingle.

He was: Hilbert Carroll Ward, aged 29, a proof-reader employed by “The Press.”

He was found on the side of the Main North road just south of Chaneys comer, about 3.10 a.m. by Mr Warren Maxwell Holder, a milkman.

The police said that Mr Ward was riding north at the time of the accident, and had apparently swerved to avoid the hurdle. The motor-scooter was only slightly damaged.

Mr Ward was taken by ambulance to the Christchurch Public Hospital, and was found to be dead on arrival.

TRAIN STRIKES CAR Child Killed, Mother Seriously Injured

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 10.

A boy aged five was fataily injured and his mother seriouslv injured when a north-bound goods train struck their car on the Waimotu crossing at Maheno at 5.30 p.m. today. The driver of the car, Mrs Daphney Isabella Bishop, of Waimotu, suffered extensive head injuries and was admitted to the Oamaru Public Hospital.

Her son, Peter William Bishop, also suffered severe head injuries, and was admitted to hospital in a critical condition. He died this evening. Another child, Barbara Ruth Bishop, aged 14, suffered minor injuries, but crawled from the wrecked car and ran half a mile to her home for assistance.

At the time it was raining heavily, and it is thought that this may have contributed to the accident.

Caught By Agitator

(New Zealand Press Association) DANNEVIRKE. March 10.

David Barry Hulena, aged 24, married, with three children, was killed while working at the Tamaki-Kiritaki Co-operative Dairy Company, Te Rehunga, this morning.

Mr Hulena was caught by an agitator in a vat in the caseinmaking department of the factory.

MAN DROWNED IN CREEK

Fall When Crossing On Log

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 10.

When he fell off a log which he was using to cross a creek, a retired farmer was drowned at Henderson yesterday. He was: Thomas McGougan, aged 73, of 62 Marsden avenue, Mount Eden.

Mr McGougan had been living with his daughter at Lincoln road, Henderson, since his own house was burned down.

BURNED TO DEATH IN CAR

Youth Identified

(New Zealand Press Association/ AUCKLAND, March 10.

A youth, aged 17, was burned to death when his 1939 model car overturned and burst into flames in Auckland at 10.50 p.m. yesterday. He was: Raymond Clive Owen Thelwall, single, a drainlayer, of 143 Old Mill road. Grey Lynn, Auckland.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Old Mill road and Surrey crescent. Ambulance drivers who arrived a few minutes after getting a telephone call were unable to get within 10ft of the burning vehicle because of the searing heat.

Pedestrian Dies Of Injuries

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 10.

A retired nurseryman died in the Middlemore Public Hospital early this morning from injuries suffered when he was struck by a car in Forest Hill road, Henderson, last night.

He was: John Bush, aged 80, single, of Forest Hill road, Henderson. Mr Bush was returning home after attending church when thar accident occurred.
