COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF

Sumner Sea Wall

It appeared that objections to the height of the sea wall planned for Sumner—3ft 6in—had been withdrawn, the works committee reported to the City Council last evening.

A sum of £7500 was provided on the estimates as part of the cost of sea protection work at Sumner, the committee said, but work was delayed because of objections to the height of the wall. The council agreed that plans be prepared and tenders called foi the work.

Airport Telephones.— Users of the Christchurch airport have approved a new telephone system for the airport. There will be an automatic exchange with an initial capacity of four switchboards, 60 trunk lines and 270 extensions. It will be capable of extension to six switchboards, 120 trunk lines and 600 extensions. Removal of Old Houses.—A petition by seven residents of Bexley road protesting against the removal of old houses to the Bexley area was reasonable, the town-planning committee reported. On its recommendation, the council agreed that no more houses would be allowed to be removed to the Bexley road area. Traffic Officers.— Messrs H. E. Pickett and P. D. J. Underwood were appointed probationary traffic officers.

City Treasurer.— Seventeen applications have been received for the position of city treasurer. Painting Exhibit. “Mount Taratara, Northland,’’ by Arthur C. Hipwell, the winning entry for the 1957 Kelliher art prize, was accepted by the council for display in Christchurch from July 22 to August 5. Speed Restriction.— A 20-mile-an-hour speed restriction was imposed on Shaw avenue between the northern and southern entrances to Rawhiti Domain. Honorary Ranger.— Mr S. Sutcliffe, of the R.S.A. Bowling Club in Hagley Park, was appointed an honorary ranger.

Peace Memorial Hall.—The council agreed to lend £l9OO required for improvements to the Peace Memorial Hall, Nwriti Beach, after Cr. W. J. Cowles had reported that local residents had raised £6OO recently towards the cost of the work. It accepted a tender of £6994 for the work. Sumner Bandstand.— The council agreed to demolish the old Sumner band rotunda, as part of the new layout of the foreshore.
