Preference

Sir,—The complete absence of shocked and indignant replies to Mr J. E. Downes Roberts’s proposal to scrap the present 20 per cent, preference given to United Kingdom goods leads one to the heartening conclusion that we are at long last waking up to the fact that it is high time that this country stopped being a sucker (pardon the vulgar but very appropriate colloquialism) for our charming but shrewd British relatives. In addition to this not inconsiderable advantage bestowed on therfa by a succession of benevolent New Zealand administrations, United Kingdom exporters often adopt the playful habit of adding an extra 20 per cent, mark-up just for good measure. On the other hand, our cap-in-hand delegates politely requesting fair prices for our primary products get exactly nowhere, which is just not good enough. Even the ecstacy of Royal tours doesn’t even things up.—Yours, etc., CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME. March 10, 1958.
