The Theatre Royal
Sir, —I also was present at the opening of the new Theatre Royal in 1907. What went on on. the stage has left absolutely no iftipression on my mind, but two comic incidents I remember clearly. One was Mr George Harris, a portly lawyer of the day, and .unacquainted with the idiosyncrasies of the new tip-up seats, climbing over the back and putting his foot on the near edge of his seat after the interval. It tipped up smartly, of course, and his leg was securely jammed. He had to spend the second half in extreme discomfort sitting on the edge of the seat-back. When it was over the seat was unscrewed from the floor and was taken to pieces and he was released Tl?e other concerned a woman in the left-hand circle-box. Her lowcut evening dress kept slipping off her shoulder and, she finally had to cover the exposed part of her person with a handkerchief.— Yours, etc., G. R. MACDONALD. February 28, 1958.
