January Cases

The following cases were dealt with in the Christchurch Children’s Court in January by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., and his associates, Mrs T. Green, J.P., and Mr W. C. Colee, J.P.:— A 14-year-old boy charged with the theft of a watch was admonished and discharged. Two years’ supervision by a child welfare officer was ordered for a 14-year-old boy who admitted the theft of several birds and wilful damage. Another 14-year-old boy who accepted one of the birds knowing it was stolen, was admonished and discharged. A fine of £4 was imposed on a 17-year-old youth who took several gramophone records from the possessions of a room-mate: A 17-year-old youth who admitted unlawfully taking a motorcycle and committing wilful damage, was admonished and discharged. Restitution of £6l 10s was ordered. Supervision for one year was ordered for a 12-year-old boy who had obtained goods by false pretences. Another boy, aged 14 years, who admitted collecting money he was not entitled to was admonished and discharged, and ordered to make restitution of £1 19s. The theft of £3 resulted in a 12-year-old boy being placed under the supervision of a child welfare officer for two years. Restitution of 9s 7d was ordered. A year’s supervision and restitution of 10s were ordered for a 14-year-old boy who admitted the theft of a cycle.

A 16-year-old youth charged with indecent assault was committed to the of the Superintendent of Child Welfare. Another 16-year-old youth, charged with possessing liquor near a dance hall, was admonished and discharged. Several charges of theft, powercycle and motor-cycle conversion, and wilful damage were admitted by a 16-year-old youth. He was placed under the supervision of a child welfare officer for one year, ordered to pay £47 15s restitution, and live where directed. Supervision for one year and restitution of £l7B 10s were ordered for another 16-year-old youth charged with several offences of wilful damage, mischief, and unlawful car conversion. Traffic Offences For exceeding the speed limit a 16-year-old youth was fined £2. A 15-year-old youth who attempted to pass on the wrong side of another vehicle was admonished and discharged. For driving without due care and attention a 15-year-old youth was admonished and discharged. A 16-year-old youth who drove a motor-cycle at a dangerous speed without a protective helmet was fined £7, and his licence was suspended for three months and endorsed for three years. For riding a motor-cycle on a footpath a 16-year-old youth was fined £2.

For failing to give the right of way, a 16-year-old youth was fined £2.
