The United States Navy has been thanked for its assistance to the Soya Maru, the Japanese Antarctic expedition supply ship which was trapped in the ice off the Prince Harald Coast

The director-general of the Japanese Maritime Safety Board has said, in a message to the captain of the icebreaker, U.S.S. Burton Island: “The Japanese nation will long remember the co-opera-tion and support afforded to the Soya Maru.” The Burton Island freed the Soya Maru and assisted in the evacuation of the wintering party from the Japanese base. A further message of appreciation was received from the Japanese Minister of Education
