MELBOURNE STRIKE

Court Order To Union (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Feb. 27. Melbourne’s dock strike entered its fourth day with a Commonwealth Industrial Court order to the strikers' union not to stop its members from working the wharves. The Court also ordered that until next Tuesday the union, the Waterside Workers’ Federation, must not breach the award by any concerted failure of the men to work. The order was sought by the Commonwealth Steamship Owners’ Federation. Since Monday 4800 Melbourne dockers have been on strike because of a dispute over the sizes of working gangs, which they claim should be 17 men. The shipowners want it reduced to not less than 11. With 35 ships, most of them from overseas, idle in the port, the Waterside Workers’ Federation met this afternoon to consider the Court’s orders. It is expected to call a mass meeting of strikers tomorrow. Today, Police Commissioner Porter, in a written statement, said there was no need for the clashes which occurred in city sheds yesterday between police and demonstrating dockers and seamen. He said he would confer with union leaders to avoid similar incidents in the future.
