Surf Life-Saving First Day Of N.Z. Title Meeting

With three wins in the heats of two events yesterday afternoon, the Waikanae Surf Life-saving Club, of Gisborne, upset many of the favourites for titles at the first day of the 1958 championships at South Brighton yesterday. Waikanae beat last year’s winner of the Nelson Shield, Maranui, in a heat of the senior six-man rescue and resuscitation event, and also reached the final in the senior four-man event.

A moderate surf was running, with only the slightest drift from the north. Swimmers had little difficulty in reaching the buoys, and land drill was more important than usual.

Although Taylor’s Mistake gained highest points in the swimming section of the first heat of the senior six-man rescue and resuscitation —the premier event of the meeting for the Nelson Shield —sound work in all o + ’ er departments gave first place to South Brighton A, winner of the title in 1956 and runner-up last year. C. Barltrop, the Taylor’s Mistake beltman, was first to the buoy, but the advantage was lost in the resuscitation, which was not of a high standard. Title-Holder Beaten

Maranui A, last year’s titlewinner, was well beaten by Waikanae in the second heat. B Oliver, a New Zealand representative, was belt man for Maranui. but the. team lost heavily on discipline and drill. Waikanae scored well in all sections.

Sumner won the third heat. It was not prominent in the swim, but drill and resuscitation gave it the deciding points over Island Bay, noted for its land work. 1. Stewart, ' a former Canterbury resuscitation champion now living in Hamilton, travelled to Christchurch by air on Thursday to join the Sumner team. Red Beach (Auckland) won the fourth heat narrowly from Waimairi. In the Red Beach team were two Auckland swimming representatives, R. Woodall and R. Harker. „ Waikanae strengthened its chances of winning the shield when its B team won the fifth and final heat. It is three years since two teams from one club have reached the final of this event. Four-Man Event With excellent line, reel, and belt work, Maranui easily won the first heat of the senior fourman rescue and resuscitation championship. F. Woodford, M. Haxton, R. Edwards, and R. B. Oliver lost only 4.4 points in a possible of 70. Haxton, in the belt, scored heavily. The second team, Castlecliff, lost 9.8 points. After being first to the buoy, Titahi Bay gave a good display in land work to win the second heat. The team has been performing well in Wellington this year, although it has had no successes at national meetings. Waikanae won again in the third heat of this event. B. McLean, a member of the 1956 New Zealand team in Australia, reached the buoy well ahead of the other competitors. Taylor’s Mistake, East End, Lyall Bay, and Sumner closely disputed the minor placings. The present champion, Eastern United, was well served by J. Sneyd, another New Zealand representative in Australia in 1956. The team had almost a three-point margin over the next placed team, Paekakariki. In the fifth heat, R. Henry’s work was decisive in giving New Brighton a narrow margin over Opunake. Results were:— SENIOR SIX-MAN RESCUE AND RESUSCITATION First Heat.—South Brighton A (F. J. McKenzie, J. A. Lee, G. D.
