FIRST LEG SURPRISE

McGimpy Wins Narrowly McGimpy, the 11, 11 favourite in a field of 13, caused a major upset when he won the first leg of the double, the McKenna Handicap. McGimpy was handily 1 placed all the way and finished: well for a narrow win. . { Vanity Scott and McGimpy be-; gan best from 12 yards and they; led at the end of 75 yards. May-: neen and then Gold Cloud raced past them. Gold Cloud taking con-: trol before the end of three fur-: longs. Mighty Loyal raced up to Go’d Cloud in the back straight, and raced clear at the three. He turned for home ahead of Mayneen. Gold Cloud, Vanity Seofct, McGimpy, Mountain Brigade, Golden Hero and Becky Medoro. Mayneen was in front about the furlong, but soon came to the end of her run. Mountain Brigade put in his run on the Outer and looked likely to win until McGimpy put in his claim on the inside. McGimpy responded well and won by half a head. Mountain Brigade raced right up to his two placings at Addington and took second place, three lengths in front of Becky Medoro. which broke badly and was well back most of the way. Her effort ♦o finish third was a feature of the race. Solemnity made up ground for fourth, ahead of Vanity Scott, with Mayneen three lengths away, followed by Golden Hero and Gold Mist. Super Attack In Form Super Attack gained his second win for the season when he lasted to take a decision in the Marine Handicap. Suner Attack was one of the early leaders, but Stellar still had charge racing to the straight from Toronto Bov, Toka Boy, Super Attack, Chief Lady. Whippy Dillon and Banauier Stellar was soon headed by Toronto Boy and then Super Attack closed on the leaders. He was hotly pursued by Banquier and Whiopv Dillon, but lasted to win by half a head. Banquier and Whippy Dillon, both of which paced sound races, dead-heated for second. Banquier came from well back after being handy to Whippy Dillon most of the way. Toronto Boy tired in the run home and was a length back fourth, with Stellar, Comneer and Toka Bov ahead of En Avant and Shantung. Another Win Commander Spangle, a winner at Addington on Tuesday, repeated that effort in the Burwood Handican. He received a good run on the inside for most of the race. Ponty forced most of the pace and he turned for home ahead of Spring Chat, with Commander Soangle. Surie Queen. Johnny Guitar. Night Owl and Wainoni Loyal Ponty began to drop out before the furlong, where Commander Soangle moved clear. Wainoni Loyal set out after him, but made no serious impression. Commander Spangle winning by a short length. Catainaran. after being slow early, finished very fast wide out and got un for third two and a half lengths behind Wainoni Loval Spring Chat paced a useful race for fourth, ahead of Johnny Guitar, with Dismiss, Finestra. Achates and Night- Owl next. .

There was considerable jostling at the start. Fame fell, and Finestra, Ladyship. Sextant and Achates lost their chances Glister Outstanding

Glister, after being hopelessly hemmed in eight places back on the rails when approaching the straight, put in a brilliant run against the outside fence over the last furlong to win ’the Aranui Handican. Her task was made more difficult when she was involved in a skirmish with just less than seven furlongs left. She lost three or four lengths in the incident.

Raven Dew made all the pace and turned for home clear of Mossgiel and Elsinore, with Black Satin. Josie Gay. Allard and Resolution handy, and Final Say Also showing up. Raven Dew and Elsinore looked to have the finish to themselves until Glister put in an appearance on the extreme outside She responded with a tremendous sprint to the urgings of M Holmes and got up to take a nose decision.

Raven Dew. after forcing the pace, held on for second, half a head in front of Elsinore, which paced a sound race Final Say was fourth two lengths behind Elsinore, with Leithton Lass. Allard, Fox Able and Mossgiel following. Surprise Win

Larnie Scott, which was having only his second start for some seasons, brought a change of luck to his trainer. A, J Bourne, with a good win in the Waimairi Handican. N. L. Ber- i kett kept him handy to the leader ’ Van Ardee Cantain Snider and i Larnie Scott followed the pace-1 maker turning for home, with Dalmatian. Suner Way. Great Caution. Larnie Scott raced past the leaders just inside the furlong and finished on in grand style to win bv a length Dalmatian, which did not re- i ceive a good run in the straight j after being handy all the way. i was a useful second, a neck in front of the fast-finishing Estelle, i which broke at the end of a fur- • long.
