TROTTING NEW BRIGHTON CUP

East Dome Too Good For Others

The Gore-trained five-year-old, East Dome, won his second race in seven days on Saturday on an easy track in the New Brighton Cup. The £ll5O race was the feature event and second leg of the double at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s autumn meeting.

P. M. Tapper had East Dome in thirteenth place when the field settled down. He raced him round the field to lead before the end of the first mile, and from then he had the result in safe keeping.

The race was East Dome’s sixth winning run for the season. He is now on a 4min 26sec mark for the two miles and requires only two further successes over a distance to reach New Zealand Cup class. Tapper said after Saturday’s race that he was taking East Dome back to Gore yesterday. He ini tends to turn him out for 10 days .and then prepare him for racing iat the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting. No excuses could be made for the horses to finish behind East Dome. Golden Chimes received a good run all the way and was a fair second, with Bon Ton and Invicta finishing third and fourth respectively, ahead of a tired lot. The first leg, the McKenna Handicap, was won by the lightly supported McGimpy, which returned a win dividend of £27 14s 6d. An aged gelding by Indictment from Regal Voyage, he is a halfbrother to a champion mare Haughty. He is owned and trained by R. H. Filippi and was driven on Saturday by T. F Thompson. The McGimpy-East Dome doubles combination returned £153 7s 6d for £l. The meeting was held in overcast weather before a large attendance. The track was cutting out. Several outstanding performances were recorded during the day, particularly those of Glister Larnie Scott and Rola Veyor. Totalisator investments amounted to £89,622, including £8478 on the double, compared with £86,170 last year. Cup Running

East Dome began safely but slowly in the New Brighton Cup Auditor broke badly, running Suzendy to the outside fence. Scottish Fair was first out, but Ricochet raced , clear before the end of three furlongs. East Dome was thirteenth when the field settled down, but at the end of five furlongs he was pulled out and began to race round the field He moved up to take the lead before the end of one mile, and was still in control at the straight entrance, where Ricochet, Black Douglas Golden Chimes, Overdrive, Showdown, Bon Ton and Invicta were showing up. East Dome was under pressure at the furlong, but he responded in grand style to win decisively by a length. Golden Chimes received a perfect run handy to the leaders all the way and §he battled on for second, three lengths in front of Bon Ton, which had trouble working clear when racing to the straight. He made a lot of ground over the last furlong and lasted long enough to hold off Invicta by half a head. Invicta was badly placed most of the way and he had to wait for an opening on the inside before he could make a run. Recruit, which was pulled to the outside in the straight, put in a fine sprint to finish fifth, ahead of Ricbchet, Black Douglas. Kingsdown Direct, Scottish Fair and Showdown. Native Cord Wins Native Cord led from end to end in the Autumn Handicap. He accelerated quickly and was soon well clear. He had an advantage of 10 lengths at the end of half a mile. Manana led the chase after him for six furlongs, but it was left to Cat’s Luck and Indianna to close the gap. Native Cord was being kept up to ' his work approaching the straight where he was three lengths in front of Cat’s Luck, with Fifth Brigade, Indianna, White Wings, See All and Madam Grattan handiest of the others. Native Cord ran on in grand style in the straight and held on to win by a length and a half. Cat’s Luck raced right up to her best form to take second place. She was three lengths in front of Fifth Brigade and Indianna, which dead-heated for third Madam Gratian made up ground for fifth, ahead of See All, with Quite Contrary and Unlikely following. Rola Veyor’s Sprint Rola Veyor, after being second last to the half-mile and still well towards the rear of a bunched field approaching the straight, finished brilliantly wide out on the track to win the Esplanade Handicap.

Diamond Hanover was sprinted up from an outside barrier position to take the lead at the end of three furlongs. He slowed the field down a little in the back straight, where Dame Sybil raced up to join the pacemaker. The field bunched racing to the straight, where Dame Sybil and Royal Ministrel were on the outside of Diamond Hanover, with Impresario, Parable, Banjo, Rola Veyor. Lady Cook and Fourth Edition all showing up. Diamond Hanover was beaten outside the furlong and Fourth Edition raced to be challenged immediately by' Rola Veyor, which got up in the last few strides to win by a head. Fourth Edition lost a few lengths at the start, but received a good run afterwards. He was not disgraced. Banjo made up ground in the straight to take third place a length and a half behind Fourth Edition, with a short length tack to Impresario. Reason Why was a neck back fifth, just ahead of Parable. Gay Cobra, Vierosa and Dame Sybil. Results • ARANUI HANDICAP, Of £375. 3min 33sec class. One mile and a half. 1. I—T. W. 'Gudsell’s blk m GLISTER (10) by WhipsterSpangle 4yrs scr M. Holmes 1
