FAREWELL ON BALCONY
Queen Mother Ignores Rain
The Queen ' Mother brushed aside the offer of an umbrella before she appeared on the balcony of the Clarendon Hotel to wave farewell to many thousands waiting in the rain. Before this, the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), and the Mayoress and the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) arrived and waited at the entrance to the hotel for Her Majesty. They were accorded a long series of cheers and applause.
Then the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) left the hotel and entered his car amid more .applause. The stage was set for the last appearance in the hotel surrounds of Her Majesty when the Governor-General (Lord Cobham) and t Lady Cobham left the hotel and stood side by side at the edge of the carpet awaiting Her Majesty. Almost exactly at 11.30 a.m., the Queen Mother came out from the hotel. She stopped to talk with the Mayor and Mayoress for several seconds. She told them how delightful her tour had been, and after a word or two to Lord and Lady Cobham,- stepped into her car, as Lady Jean Rankin, a lady-in-waiting, curtsied to Lord and Lady Cobham.
